When it comes to being on the front lines of Christ's ministry, Korla is walking the walk. She regularly inspires me to hear the call to utilize my white body to advocate for people of color who get a raw deal from racist laws, police, and government organizations.

My Masters of Divinity culminated in three courses my senior year: Theological Short Stories, Capstone, and God. Here are peeks at all three finals.

Theological Short Stories:
If one followed Jesus, it would totally mess up their routines and offer no guarantee of safety. Is it better to be alive and in bondage than free but in peril?

Capstone:
This radical theological lens is the one I look through after wrestling with tradition, experience, and scripture. This is not to say I accept traditional theological interpretations without critical engagement, but rather insist on the courage required to claim personal theological truths as humanity builds our relationship with God.

God:
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">By enmeshing God with you, and all the rest of creation, dear reader, the result may seem unfavorable because it fuses God with the less desirable and even cruel aspects of the world. While this is true, I maintain only an ambiguous God can be deemed critically plausible, as well as empirically and metaphorically greatest in scale - and thus worthy of worship.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;">I affirm the concept of pantheism, whereas the size of God is not relocated to a supernatural or transrational realm, but rather is embodied in the magnitude of all creation. While our ancestors separated the world and God, shrinking God to a supernatural realm, I would argue the totality of reality (mental, physical, and spiritual) is God. This may have been seen once as a shrinking of God’s magnitude, thanks to modern science we know our temporal realm includes areas unavailable to our understanding and interaction, such as light spectrums not visible with the human eye and a multiverse of existence as established by String Theory. What is “real” is more immense than we’ve ever imagined, and nothing more glorious could be called God.

It could be attributed to a rough week of a cold and some sleep regression issues with the toddler, but I feel like I didn't need ash Wednesday to remind me of my mortality. I've been wrestling with a deep awareness of mortality for about a year now.

Last year started with a blessed death of a beloved congregant. But that summer was filled with emersion into many terribly difficult and unexpected deaths. The fall experience turned back toward the academic with insights into a constructed theological model featuring the death of God.

The blessing of death should remind us of the importance in each living moment. Easter is the big moment I am building toward in a year, but what if it is not assured? Perhaps that is the gift of Easter, not transcendence of death, but the promise of something more than only death for our lives. In this way, death loses its power to restrain the evolutionary instinct of self-preservation which holds species back from taking innovative leaps.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06159369844438396551noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8252926042721715676.post-25596110677056424272017-02-13T07:48:00.003-08:002017-02-13T07:57:54.249-08:00Happy National African American History Month
I noticed on the Black History Month page on history.com, it mentions Frederick Douglass -whose birthday is in February- as one of the reasons why Black History Month is in February.

I wonder if a Trump assistant just went to History.com to find a prominent figure for BHM to put in Trump's speech for him to mention (as though Trump knows and cares about BHM).

This is Frederick Douglass. The good lookin' reformer of the latter half of the 1800's. What have we done?
Will piety be forgotten in favor of lewd behavior and impulsive speech?
Have we so forgotten you, oh Lord?

You who walked with your people
You who spoke to your prophets
You who evolve the mind and transform our will

Where are you now oh God?
In the racist?
In the xenophobe?
Have we so forgotten their worth that we need to be reminded?

Fill us with your hope.
Fill us with your love.
Fill us,
that we might continue to strive toward freedom, justice, and peace.

Remind us that we are not alone.
Remind us that we are not the first to walk this path.
Show us our ancestors of justice work
Show us the path toward your Kingdom is not the easy one

With your Spirit in us,
we will press on.

We pray to remember the journey forward must include those at the back.

We pray for patience.
We pray for grace.
We pray to see a new day.

May it be so.
Amen
I've been seeing a mixed response to Colin Kaepernick's recent statement. It seems like the big rejection of his message stems from a perceived disconnect between the idea of "US oppression of people of color" and "Kaepernick's stupid amount of money to play a game."

<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; display: inline; font-family: "San Francisco", -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: -0.24px; line-height: 16.08px;">

If a private corporation in a country can make a few people of color millionaires (entertaining the masses) then there's no way that same country could oppress people of color? I'm not sure that's sound logic.

On the other hand, If a country IS oppressing people of color, and one of those few millionaires speaks out against it, I would imagine that person would be instantly bombarded with disrespectful vitriol. Perhaps even censured.

I think the backlash have something to do with the fact that football is escapism for millions of Americans. We go to football to forget about our lives for 4 hours a week. Now, with one of the big names suddenly bringing all the frustrations of the world into what I call a 'safe escape from reality,' I'm not surprised at the backlash.

There are comparisons about "who's the real hero:" the guy who went to war, or the guy who makes millions. And, well, I don't think that's the point. I don't think Kaepernick has ever said he did this to be a hero. He also hasn't said anything against the military or those who serve. It's about domestic racist systems of oppression, like laws designed to disproportionally target people of color. They exist. Today.

Personally, I've never cared too much for Kaepernick, but it seems like he wants to exercise his rights to not stand for our country's anthem - risking a multimillion-dollar dream job - because he sees an injustice in his society and decided to use his platform to speak against it. It's not risking his life directly (though he's probably getting death threats). It is for sure risking his livelihood. In America, if you risk your ability to make money, you're risking a lot. I've gotta say, that's pretty brave.

As we once again come upon Christmas, I'm pondering the current state of Christianity and dismayed by hate, yet still finding hope. To avoid being labeled a Communist, the Cold War made masses of people in this country claim Christianity falsely. They were never rebuked and told following Christ doesn't mean being AT church or saving yourself, it means BEING the church, and saving the world. Today, we have so many loud voices saying they're Christian, yet not following Christ. And it's still accepted.

In two days I will celebrate Christmas, the entering into this world of hope and love. Pure, and untarnished, hope and love. Did it "actually" happen? Who knows? Some have faith it did, some have faith it did not. I will continue to tell it because I know stories shape our reality. I choose to shape reality by celebrating the incarnation of pure hope and love. By telling this story I remind myself that fear and hate are not the final word. Hope will come in unlikely and unexpected ways.
